The main purpose of this Open Data Site is to provide situational awareness to college bound students on where colleges and universities are located on the East Coast of the United States. All of the data was obtained from ArcGIS Open Data.
Functionality of this Open Data Site
The user of this Open Data Site can search for the college and university data by either state name or region. For this site, the East Coast of the United States was divided into two regions (Southeast Region and Northeast Region). To search by state name, the user must enter the appropriate information in the field under "Search Open Data by State Name". To search by region, the end user must click on one of the two buttons under the "Explore the College and University Open Data by the North and Southeast Regions of the US". Once the search has been conducted, the available open data will be presented to the user, and they can explore the data by clicking on the dataset and observing it in the map presentation at the top of the page.
Also, the end user can click on the individual points to obtain additional information about that college or university. The attribute tables and popup windows have been configured for easy viewing and navigation.
To download a dataset, the end user must click on a dataset of interest and navigate to the "Download Data" Button. Then, they must select the file type, Excel Spreadsheet, KML File, Shapefile, or File Geodatabase. Once this is complete, the end user will select where the dataset will be downloaded to their system. There is an "API" Button next to the "Download Data" Button, but these types of files are intended for GIS developers. It is recommended to use to use the "Download Data" Button.
